Ohio University seeks a Vice Provost for Global Affairs to continue its tradition of excellence as an institution dedicated to education, research, and outreach that is international and interdisciplinary in scope. Through the development of outstanding academic programs; unique partnerships with international organizations, governments, non-governmental organizations, and universities; and unparalleled research resources, global education has been critical to the university?s history, identity, mission, and vision.

Ohio University, founded in Athens, Ohio in 1804 as the first university in the Northwest Territory, is a comprehensive public university with five regional campuses in Southeastern Ohio. The university maintains longstanding and productive partnerships with institutions and organizations in Africa, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. The university has a significant focus on undergraduate education with a tradition of undergraduate participation in professional projects, research, and creative activity. In its graduate and professional programs, the university aims to build on select areas of demonstrated excellence, entrepreneurship, and global education. Ohio University has been successful in its efforts to attract increasing numbers of international students to its undergraduate, professional, and graduate programs.

Description of the Position

The Vice Provost for Global Affairs provides strategic and innovative thinking regarding internationalization and global partnerships. The scope of the position is institutional and includes promoting globalization inside and outside Ohio University in research and scholarship; chairing the Senior International Management Team; serving as a resource for curriculum innovations and integration; encouraging student and faculty diversity; advancing collaborative international initiatives including enrollment efforts and the institution?s international strategic plan; advising university leadership on matters relating to international protocol; and actively engaging in fundraising. The Vice Provost works in partnership with the deans, other academic planning unit heads, and senior staff in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. S/he is responsible for helping them to achieve their strategic goals.

The Vice Provost oversees the Center for International Studies, an academic unit charged with internationalizing the Ohio University learning and living community and infusing global education into the curricula on campuses and abroad. High quality, globally focused undergraduate and graduate degrees and programs are at the core of our mission, serving as a catalyst for interdisciplinary and experiential engagement among faculty and students across the institution. S/he also administers OHIO global partnerships; promotes on-campus, community and international outreach; supervises the Office of Education Abroad, Global Leadership Center, International Student and Faculty Services; and supports the teaching of traditional and less commonly taught languages.

Minimum qualifications

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Vice Provost for Global Affairs will possess the following qualifications:

• Credentials that merit tenure at the rank of professor in an appropriate department.
• Notable record of teaching, creative/scholarly activity, and outreach of an international nature within a global context.
• Demonstrated capacity for university leadership through substantial service as a chair, director, or executive level administrator for a significant academic program or an equivalent role in an internationally focused organization.
• Managerial experience in fostering an open collaborative environment that supports staff and encourages teamwork across units.
• An established portfolio of relationships and networks throughout the globe and the demonstrated ability to work successfully in a broad spectrum of the world?s cultures.
• Evidence of a track record in meeting the educational and cultural needs of diverse populations.
• In addition to the minimum qualifications described above, successful candidates should be able to outline their commitment, experience, interest, and abilities in the following areas:
• Demonstrated intellectual leadership in the broad area of international studies/globalization.
• Experience managing complex budgets and resources, including knowledge of, or interest in, responsibility-centered management.
• Background in strategic planning and a record of visionary leadership.
• Established aptitude, or interest and capacity, for external fundraising and alumni relations.
• Ability to engage constituents at the campus, local, state, national, and international levels.
