Explosion in University of Oregon science lab injures faculty

EUGENE, Ore. -?An explosion in a?University of Oregon campus science lab injured a member of the faculty.

The man, working under an exhaust hood, suffered unspecified injuries. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The?explosion?littered the lab with shattered glass.

A witness told KVAL?News he heard an explosion before firefighters and police responded to close 13th Avenue and tend to a man who appeared at least mildly injured.

An Oregon State?fire marshal hazardous material team's?truck responded to the scene.

People evacuated about a dozen people from?the building as a precaution.

Firefighters?went inside the campus building?to?check?out the situation.

A portion of 13th Avenue was closed as of 3 p.m.

The road was open again by 4 p.m. after firefighters said peole could safely re-enter the building.

The University of Oregon issued this message at 3:42 p.m.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. today, a small explosion occurred under a chemical hood in a research area on the third floor of Huestis Hall. A faculty member was injured and was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with non-life-threatening injuries.

Huestis Hall was evacuated, but the incident was contained to the third floor lab. There is no immediate danger to the surrounding area. The UO Department of Public Safety and Environmental Health and Safety responded when the original call was received by the Communications and Emergency Response Center. Eugene Fire Department and HAZMAT teams are on the scene.
