Focus on Carroll as Liverpool hosts Newcastle

LONDON (AP) -Andy Carroll can start repaying the faith shown in him by Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish by guiding the club to victory over former side Newcastle in the stand-out match in the Premier League's latest round of holiday fixtures.

Luis Suarez's one-match suspension for sticking his middle finger up at Fulham fans in a recent league match should ensure Carroll starts at Anfield on Friday, against the team that sold him for 35 million pounds ($56 million) in a stunning last-minute deal in January's transfer window.

The mighty price tag - which made him one of the world's costliest ever players - appears to be weighing heavily on the England striker, who has only scored twice in the league this season and has often started on the bench behind Suarez.

Brushing aside regular stories in the British press about Carroll's off-field habits - he was urged by England manager Fabio Capello in September to drink less if he is to become a regular in the national squad - Dalglish insists the player can still thrive at Liverpool.

"He is adapting well to the change and we will keep working with him and, fortunately for Andy, we have much greater belief in him than a lot of people have who write about him," Dalglish said.

"He is not struggling to deal with anything - I don't think self-belief is a problem for Andy Carroll, I don't see why it should be."

Carroll - a boyhood Newcastle fan - could be set for an extended run in Liverpool's starting lineup after Suarez was handed an eight-match ban from the Football Association last week for racially insulting Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match in October.

The Uruguay international is likely to appeal against the suspension but could face a lengthy spell out, giving regular opportunities to Carroll.

With Liverpool having drawn its last two games, against lowly sides Wigan and Blackburn, it needs to get back to winning ways to keep pace with its rivals for the Champions League places.

Liverpool is currently in sixth place, a point and a place above Newcastle but three off fourth-place Chelsea.

"I think we deserve to be higher up the table than we are but you've got to earn that right and not talk about it," Dalglish said. "To be fair, they (the players) have done a lot of talking on the pitch for us.

"As long as we are in there somewhere, continue to do the right things and give ourselves a chance (come the end of the season) then we'll be happy with that."

It's unlikely that Liverpool will be involved in this season's title race, which is shaping up after 18 of the 38 games to be a three-horse race between the two Manchester clubs, City and United, and Tottenham.

City is top on goal difference from United, with Spurs seven points adrift in third but with a game in hand - at home to Everton next month.

With City not playing until New Year's Day, when it visits Sunderland, United should end 2011 at the top of the table as it hosts bottom club Blackburn a day earlier.

A sixth straight league win since being held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle at Old Trafford on Nov. 26 would be the perfect way for United manager Alex Ferguson to celebrate his 70th birthday.

"When you win all the time, you get a real hunger for it," said United defender Jonny Evans, who will miss the match with a calf problem to join a growing injury list that also includes fellow center backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

"That's something the manager's built here over the years. You don't like the feeling you get when you lose - even in training. And we don't want to get to the end of the season with nothing to show for it."

Tottenham will look to hand Swansea only its second home defeat of the season to stay on the coattails of the top two, while Chelsea - a point further adrift - hosts Aston Villa and fifth-place Arsenal is at home to Queens Park Rangers.

Police Say Christmas Gaming Drove Woman to Attack Children with Butcher Knife Allegedly enraged over her five-year-old son's playing of a video game he received as a Christmas gift, Jutrina Tillman of Phoenix, Arizona, dragged the young boy into his bedroom and began to strangle him before threatening to kill him and his 13-year-old sister with a butcher knife.

Around 10PM on Christmas night Phoenix police received a 911 call from Tillman's hysterical daughter, claiming the woman was attempting to kill her and her younger brother over a video game.

Tillman, who had reportedly been drinking throughout the day, flew into a rage over her five-year-old son's playing of a new game he received as a holiday gift earlier that day. According to the daughter, the mother grabbed her son by the arm and dragged him into his bedroom. Hearing screaming, the daughter entered the room to find her mother strangling her little brother.

Tillman stopped attacking the boy, leaving the room only to return with a six to eight inch butcher knife, pointing it at the girl's chest and brandishing it towards the boy, threatening to kill them both. When the daughter broke free and ran outside dialing 911, the mother grabbed the boy and bore him back inside the house, choking him with the crook of her arm.

Fortunately police arrived before either child was seriously hurt. Upon their arrival Tillman attempted to flee to a neighbor's house but was taken into custody. The children are safe with relatives today, while Tillman herself is police custody, facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

So, how was your Christmas?

Gingrich goes after rivals despite positive pledge (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? No more Mr. Nice Guy. Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich lambasted two of his top GOP rivals on Tuesday, despite his claim that he's sticking to a positive campaign.

Gingrich said he couldn't vote for Ron Paul if he were to become the GOP nominee and called the Texas congressman's views "totally outside the mainstream of every decent American."

In the same interview on CNN, Gingrich also offered a testy rebuke to Mitt Romney, saying that if Romney wants to run a negative campaign attacking Gingrich he should at least be "man enough to own it."

The sharp comments come as the former House speaker has seen his support slip in Iowa amid a barrage of attack ads that have cast him as an ethically challenged Washington insider.

Scrambling to regain momentum, Gingrich and a political action committee supporting him each took the wraps off television spots that will run statewide in Iowa.

The PAC Winning the Future is composed of former Gingrich staffers. The ad, its first, includes a broadside at Romney, although the former Massachusetts governor is never named.

"The Republican establishment wants to pick our candidate," the ad says. "When a principled conservative took the lead, they outspent Newt Gingrich 20 to 1, attacking him with falsehoods. ... Don't let the liberal Republican establishment pick our candidate."

Gingrich has said he will disavow any independent political action committee that spends money on negative ads. His own spot, funded by his campaign coffers, focuses on jobs and economic growth.

The former Georgia congressman launched a 22-stop "Jobs and Prosperity" bus tour, which kicked off Tuesday in Dubuque, in the northeast corner of Iowa. But he found himself on the defensive again on health care as a new memo surfaces that showed he had once praised the law enacted in Massachusetts when Romney was governor.

In an April 2006 memo from Gingrich's Atlanta-based Center for Health Transformation, he called it "the most exciting development of the past few weeks." He also said the law had "tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system."

The memo also noted shortcomings in the Massachusetts law. Gingrich said the state's many regulations prohibited insurers from offering cheaper plans that would make coverage affordable. But he went on to note that that "we agree entirely with Gov. Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100 percent insurance coverage for all Americans."

Gingrich and others have argued that the Massachusetts law, widely seen as the model for President Barack Obama's national health overhaul, undercuts Romney's conservative credentials. Gingrich also has faced questions about his past support for an individual health care mandate, anathema to conservatives.

A Gingrich spokesman said Gingrich's comments are "old news that has been covered already."

"Newt previously supported a mandate for health insurance and changed his mind after seeing its effects," said the spokesman, R.C. Hammond. "The real question is why `Mitt the Massachusetts Moderate' won't admit that health insurance mandates don't work."

The Gingrich memo was first reported Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal.

If you were anywhere near Twitter at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, you already know that the email from The New York Times to you, "Home Delivery Subscriber," is a fake. Moments after the email started to appear in what seems to be thousands of inboxes, the paper's communication department rushed to alert its readers and followers that the email asking recipients who had recently cancelled their Times subscriptions to "reconsider" was not sent by The New York Times. If you received an email that looks something like the one below, do not click any of the links. Computer viruses will inevitably ensue.

It's unclear from whom the email came, though the reply to address reads "The New York Times <nytimes@email.newyorktimes.com>." A-Rod fine after treatment on knee, shoulder

(AP) ? The New York Yankees say star third baseman Alex Rodriguez is totally fine after having special treatment on his right knee and left shoulder in Germany earlier this month.

The 36-year-old Rodriguez had plasma-rich platelet injections following a recommendation from Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday that the team gave its permission after vetting the process.

Rodriguez's treatment was first reported by the New York Post.

Cashman says the therapy is in "complete compliance" with WADA and Major League Baseball regulations. He also said the treatment is performed in the United States. The Yankees say Rodriguez went to the doctor in Germany because he's at the top of this field.

Rodriguez had surgery on his right knee last July and saw his power drop in the second half and postseason. He played in 99 games and hit 16 home runs. He has 629 career homers.

Cashman says Rodriguez is "100 percent" right now and that there are "no red flags" going into spring training. Cashman says he expects Rodriguez to be able to play every day.

The Yankees also said they've reached agreement with 37-year-old lefty Hideki Okajima for a nonroster invite to spring training. Once a staple of the Boston bullpen, he spent most of last year in Triple-A for the Red Sox. The Yankees envision him as a possible lefty specialist.

Japan?s Top 3 Mobile Carriers Agree To Support Global NFC Standard

paypal-nfcJapan, one of the most advanced mobile nations in the world, doesn't want to be a "cell phone Galapagos" anymore, at least when it comes to payments over NFC. Paying with cell phones is already ubiquitous in Japan, but now the country's top three telcos (NTT Docomo, KDDI au, and SoftBank Mobile) are trying to switch from the Nippon-only Osaifu Keitai system to the Type A and Type B NFC standards used globally. The problem for the carriers is that Osaifu Keitai ("Portable Wallet"), which is based on Sony's FeliCa RFID smart card technology, isn't compatible to the Type A and B NFC standards. Docomo, KDDI, and SoftBank have set up the so-called Japan Mobile NFC Consortium to coordinate the domestic adoption of those standards with "service suppliers and handset manufacturers".

Ruby?s Diner on Oceanside Pier may not sound very up-scale but it is one of the top-rated restaurants in Oceanside with 5 gold stars.

It is a lively "pseudo-50s" diner and is great fun for the kids. The food is excellent and comprises of burgers and fast food. But these are not ordinary burgers, the Cobb Burger (pictured) is definately an upmarket burger with bacon, bleu cheese, avacado slices and more. They also serve an alternative to chips,? garlic chips with lashings of garlic.

If you go there for breakfast you can have a Great California Benedict Waffle and as Ruby?s Diner is at the end of the pier which you have to walk along to reach getting there is an adventure in itself. If you are lucky you may see a pod of dolphins swimming by as you enjoy your meal.

If you want authentic Italian cuisine Rosina?s Italian Restaurant at Del Oro is the place to go. It is open for lunch Monday through Thursday and dinner Monday through Saturday.

Rapper Baba Brinkman gets positively medieval (AP)

NEW YORK ? Most rappers boast about their intellect, but few go out and actually get a master's degree in medieval and Renaissance literature so they can spit better rhymes.

Then again, most rappers aren't Baba Brinkman.

The 33-year-old Canadian, who when talking is just as likely to quote from Ice-T as make a reference to evolutionary psychology, has put his life at the service of hip-hop, a form of music he sees as limitless in its power.

To prove it, he's rapped a version of Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century "The Canterbury Tales." He has also waded into science, tackling Charles Darwin's "The Origin of the Species," and has rapped about market economics.

"Every message is conducive to this medium," he says. "People would say, `Well, maybe in theory. But what have you got?' That's where the `Canterbury Tales' idea came about: If I can rap medieval poetry, then that will show people the boundarylessness of the genre."

Brinkman, along with his frequent DJ collaborator Jamie Simmonds, is currently revisiting Chaucer with their "The Canterbury Tales Remixed" at the SoHo Playhouse following a successful run there of "The Rap Guide to Evolution" this fall.

The show sandwiches three of the Canterbury Tales between the epic poems of Gilgamesh and Beowulf, turning these dusty old works that torture adolescents in classrooms into remarkably current and vivid stories.

"This is bigger than me; it's bigger than you, bigger than rap," Brinkman says at the top of the show. "It's bigger than fingers on triggers and bigger than gangsters slingin' the crack/That's just the latest version of an ancient story/The rage of warriors hungry for fame and glory."

During performances, Brinkman prowls the stage in a pair of jeans and a hoodie, and often interacts with Simmonds, who scratches out beats on his turntables and is prone to layer Mobb Deep cuts over strings.

The two met in 2008 in the southeast English city of Brighton and instantly bonded over their love of hip-hop. Simmonds, a 36-year-old Englishman, came from a recording studio background and was more used to spinning records to tipsy dancers in nightclubs than providing the music for a rap about behavior patterns of primate species.

"We just really connected. I really liked that it was something so different. It kind of opened a whole new world for me as well. The theater world was something I'd never been a part of," Simmonds says. "I really enjoy a challenge. And that's exactly what it was. It was putting myself out of my comfort zone."

Brinkman hails from Vancouver, British Columbia, and planted trees in the Rocky Mountains every summer for over 10 years. At Simon Fraser University, his master's thesis drew parallels between the worlds of hip-hop music and literary poetry.

After graduating, Brinkman, who was born Dirk Brinkman, has taken his award-winning hip-hop theater shows to dozens of cities around the world, including several stops at the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland. One show often leads to a commission for another from audience members stunned that Brinkman's raps can tackle any complex idea.

"Everything we do is a tribute to hip-hop. I think I'm pretty rare in that I actually got an English master's degree because I wanted to be a more versatile MC," he says.

"I wanted to explain to people that rap is not 40 years old. I mean, hip-hop as a culture is 40 years old and the thing we call rap today is 40 years old, but rhymed storytelling is ancient. Every culture's got some variation."

In many ways, his remixed Chaucer is a return to his roots. After getting his master's, Brinkman toured with a version of "The Canterbury Tales," which by then included The Miller's Tale and The Wife of Bath's Tale. For the new show, he's rewritten everything and collaborated with Simmonds on original music.

Deciding to rap about "The Canterbury Tales" makes a perverse sense. Brinkman explains that Chaucer wrote a rich and elaborate tapestry of medieval social life, combining snapshots of all classes, from nobles to workers, from priests and nuns to drunkards and thieves.

There was another reason, too: "He's dirty," says Brinkman, laughing.

"He's the Slick Rick of that era," Simmonds adds.

"`The Canterbury Tales' are so unashamed and a totally piercing portrait of human nature and human foibles. And I think rap is that as well. It doesn't blush when it looks at human behavior," Brinkman says. "It's all on display in rap ? warts and all. And that's what `The Canterbury Tales' is, too."

In the show, Brinkman's lyrics ? performed over Simmonds' moody, orchestral score ? explain the work through a cheeky modern lens. In the Pardoner's Tale, Brinkman raps that the title character is "a medieval televangelist. He's Creflo Dollar, he's Ted Haggard, he's got mad swagger like Jimmy Swaggart."

In the same tale, Brinkman offers a way to understand the three drunken men who seek to kill Death: "Think Boyz in the Hood; think Menace to Society/Just from the Middle Ages, of the Flemish variety."

His work on Chaucer led to "The Rap Guide to Evolution," "The Rap Guide to Human Nature" and "The Rap Guide to Business," which he was commissioned to write to welcome a new class at New York University's Stern School of Business.

"Human capital, it's tough to quantify," he rapped in one song. "But without it your business will not survive/Human capital, it's tough to quantify/You got to offer people more than just a nine to five."

Brinkman and Simmonds have both moved to New York and are preparing to take full advantage of their three-year work visas. Their evolution rap will tour in the spring and the Chaucer work is now enjoying a run until early January, and may tour as well.

The two are plotting a new rap guide, perhaps on religion or maybe on climate change. Whatever it is, it won't be fluffy. "I'm not exactly drawn to small talk," says Brinkman. "As an MC, I want to tackle the most controversial, interesting things in the world."

US charges ex-Fannie, Freddie CEOs with fraud

(AP) ? The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged six former top executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with civil fraud, saying they misled the government and taxpayers about risky subprime mortgages the mortgage giants held during the housing bust.

Those charged include the agencies' two former CEOs, Fannie's Daniel Mudd and Freddie's Richard Syron. They led the companies when the housing bubble burst in late 2006 and 2007. The four other top executives also worked for the companies during that time.

The case was filed in federal court in New York City.

Lawyers for Mudd and Syron couldn't be reached.

Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee about half of U.S. mortgages, or nearly 31 million loans. The Bush administration seized control of the mortgage giants in September 2008.

Russia seizes Iran-bound radioactive material (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia's customs service said Friday it had seized radioactive sodium-22, an isotope that is used in medical equipment but has no weapons use, from the luggage of a passenger planning to fly from Moscow to Tehran.

The service said in a statement that the material could be obtained only "as a result of a nuclear reactor's operations" but did not say when it had been discovered at Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport.

The material triggered an alarm in the airport's radiation control system and a luggage search led to the discovery of 18 pieces of the radioactive metal packed in individual steel casings, it said.

The passenger boarded the plane for Tehran and left Russia, the customs service said. It added that the passenger was Iranian national. Russian law enforcement agencies opened criminal investigation into the incident.

Sodium-22 can be used for calibrating nuclear detectors and in medical equipment, nuclear experts said.

"There is no weapons aspect to this (material)," said Research director Lars-Erik De Geer of the Swedish Defense Research Institute.

Tension is rising between Western powers and Iran after a United Nations nuclear watchdog report last month that said Tehran appeared to have worked on designing a nuclear weapon, and that secret research to that end may be continuing.

Russia, which built Iran's first nuclear power station, has said it might help Tehran construct more atomic plants.

There was no immediate comment from the International Atomic Energy Agency on the incident and whether Russian authorities had reported it to the Vienna-based U.N. body.

Belgian city after deadly rampage asks 'Why?' (AP)

LIEGE, Belgium ? A card at a memorial to the victims asked the question haunting all of Belgium: "Why?"

Why did Nordine Amrani, a 33-year-old with a history of lawbreaking, sweep into this city's holiday shopping center to unleash a grenade-and-gun rampage that killed three people and wounded 123 others? Why did he then kill himself?

Deepening the mystery, police announced Wednesday that another body had been found, that of a 45-year-old woman, in a shed where Amrani grew cannabis close to his home.

Liege Prosecutor Daniele Reynders said, after searches of Amrani's house, terrorism could be excluded.

"It was a cleaning lady. This is how she met him yesterday morning," she said. "She dies, shot with a bullet in the head."

The Ferris Wheel at Liege's Christmas market started turning again Wednesday, hoping to restore some festive cheer, but the mood remained black as the coal that once drove this rustbelt city in eastern Belgium.

"The crowds won't show up," said Francoise Robert, a vendor selling miniature castles and Christmas items. "People are scared."

At the outdoor bus depot that Amrani attacked, a long parade of people bundled against the wind and rain paid tribute to the victims. Young women cried and families lit candles as shards of unswept glass still littered the pavement.

"Warum (why)?" asked one card, surrounded by toys, flowers and candles. The victims included a 1 1/2 year-old toddler and two teenage boys, both students. Five others are reported in critical condition.

Adelie Miguel, a 48-year-old resident of Spanish descent, placed a bouquet of white tulips against the shattered bus stop.

"We are all Liegeois, united in suffering," she said. "This was an act of a sick man."

Beyond the dead and injured, Reynders said 40 other people had to be treated for psychological trauma.

In the capital, Brussels, the government pledged to toughen the gun law and put stricter controls on multiple offenders on conditional release. Amrani, who had done jail time for offenses involving guns and drugs, had been called in for questioning Tuesday by police in a sexual abuse case.

Amrani's lawyer said his client had been particularly scared over the last few days that he would be jailed again. It is unclear, however, if this was the tipping point.

"He was extremely nervous," Jeann-Francois Dister told VRT network. "He was impulsive but what he did was unbelievable."

Even though he still had more grenades and more rounds of ammunition with him, Amrani turned a gun on himself and shot himself in the face.

Officials said he left his Liege home with a backpack, armed with hand grenades, a revolver and an FAL assault rifle. He walked alone onto a busy downtown square, then got onto a platform that gave him an ideal view of the area, bedecked with a Christmas tree and crowded with shoppers.

From there, he lobbed three hand grenades toward nearby bus shelters, explosions that scattered glass across a wide area. He then opened fire on the crowd, prompting a stampede as hundreds fled in panic. Some ran grasping the hands of young children who had come to see the Christmas market.

In Liege, a melting pot of immigrant communities whose members worked the blast furnaces and coal mines here for decades, some people feared a backlash: Amrani had a foreign heritage, even if he was Belgian-born. In Belgium, racial stereotypes tend to surface quickly when crime is involved.

"This man? I didn't know him. I just know that he is a Moroccan," said Amrani's neighbor Wihelmina Schwartz.

Cedric Christiaens, a 20-year-old language student living close to the square, said the outrage will only increase when more people realize that Amrani was able to walk the streets on conditional release despite previous jail time and convictions for illegal gun possession and drugs.

"It was a shock to learn that he could go about his business like that," said Christiaens.
