Rejected! It?s too much like an order. And ?online copywriting? is a highly targeted keyword phrase. ?Website text? has fewer websites competing to rank for it.

Everyone has to practice writing headlines.

Action: Read and use these great tips on headline writing.

6. Edit your text

As with headlines, the first draft of your copy won?t be the best. Go through it and cut out any words you don?t need. Like this:

Change any repeated words, unless they are there for effect.

Missing From Pro-Gay Marriage TV Ads: Gay People ? CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? In one TV ad, a husband and wife talk fondly of a lesbian couple who moved into their neighborhood. In another, a married couple speaks of wanting fair treatment for their lesbian daughter. A third features a pastor talking supportively about gay unions.

Each of these ads ran recently in states with gay marriage issues on the November ballot. What?s missing? Gay people speaking for themselves.

Four states are voting on gay marriage this fall, and gay rights groups are pouring tens of millions of dollars into key TV markets in hopes of breaking a 32-state losing streak on the issue. But even as gay people and same-sex relationships gain acceptance through pop culture staples such as ?Modern Family? and ?Glee,? the idea is still seen as dicey by media strategists involved in the ballot campaigns, resulting in ads that usually involve only straight people talking about the issue.

The decision to keep gays in the background has been widely noticed in the gay community and debated on gay-oriented blogs, with some activists complaining that the move contradicts the central message of the gay rights movement for a number of years.

?If we don?t show ourselves, people aren?t going to get comfortable with who we are,? said Wayne Besen, director of Vermont-based gay rights group ?Truth Wins Out,? one of many that presses gays to live openly with pride in who they are.

But others counsel deference for the complexities of public messaging, pointing out that the ads are designed to speak to the fears and values of the heterosexual majority, whose vote will decide the issue.

?The moderate tough guys we need to flip to win a couple of these races are still the ones who say that gays are gross,? said Andy Szekeres, a Denver-based fundraising consultant who has worked on several state campaigns and had access to focus group data. ?Pushing people to an uncomfortable place, it?s something you can?t do in a TV ad,? said Szekeres, who is gay.

The definition of marriage is on the ballot this fall in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Beyond those, according to the Human Rights Campaign, 37 states prohibit gay marriage while six and the District of Columbia permit it. Gay activists and their allies are hoping that any wins in November would throw new momentum their way at a time when polls nationwide have shown growing acceptance for gay marriage.

Six of the seven ads broadcast in the contested states this year have featured only straight people talking about the issue. One ad, which played only in Maine, included a firefighter who talked of being accepted by his colleagues. The ads, along with most that ran in the 2008 campaign in California and in other past statewide races, rely on heterosexual family members and friends of gays talking about how the inability to marry has deprived their loved ones of rights and opportunities they should have.

Gay marriage opponents, who also have well-funded campaigns in the four states, plan to begin airing ads soon. In recent interviews, an organizer said the key message is aimed at parents, suggesting legal recognition could result in their kids being told in school and in society that it?s OK to be gay.

Gay activists who have worked on the marketing campaigns say that in this battle for public opinion, it?s better for gays to stay in the background.

?The simple truth is that we are trying to win over the people that are not yet with us,? said Matt McTighe, campaign manager of Mainers United for Marriage, which is pushing the ballot measure to legalize gay marriage in that state. ?I?m a gay man, and the general rule of thumb for me is that an ad that meets my emotional needs is not necessarily the thing that?s going to change a typical voter?s mind about gay or lesbian people.?

A May 2011 poll by the Pew Research Center found growing acceptance of gay people on a number of fronts, but still plenty of doubts. Fifty-eight percent of poll respondents said gays should be accepted in society compared to 33 percent who said they shouldn?t. More people thought gays raising children was bad for society rather than good, though the largest number of respondents were neutral on the question. The same poll found 45 percent support for gay marriage rights, up from 35 percent just two years earlier.

The first ad broadcast by Minnesotans United for All Families, which is trying to defeat the state?s proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage, is aimed at parents. It features Kim and John Canny ? two straight Catholics, Republicans and parents of three daughters from a Minneapolis suburb who discuss coming around to support gay marriage after a lesbian couple with an adopted son moved into their neighborhood.

The lesbian couple is briefly glimpsed in the ad, but not heard from.

Alexander Zachary, a gay man from Minneapolis, complained that the ads he?s seen reflect an ?antiquated mindset.?

?This isn?t San Francisco in 1973, where all the gay people live in one neighborhood and all the straight people live everywhere else,? he said. ?We?re not this hidden culture anymore, so why act like it??

Richard Carlbom, manager of the Minnesota campaign, declined to say if future Minnesota United ads would feature gay people. Upcoming ads will ?articulate why gay people want to get married,? he said.

Many straight people ?are on a journey on this issue, and the most effective way to encourage them is to show them other people who have taken the same journey,? and come to accept gay marriage, Carlbom said.

Bil Browning, a Washington, D.C., gay activist and writer, recently called a straights-only ad that ran in Washington state ?a heterosexual snoozefest? on his blog. He pointed out that gay activists seem to be using the strategy even though they?ve yet to win a campaign. In the 32 states where the issue has been on a statewide ballot, gay marriage advocates have lost every time.

?Maybe it?s time to reevaluate these strategies and include our families, actual LGBT people,? Browning said. ?We?re never going to win if we can?t show our faces. It looks like we have something to hide, and we don?t.?

George Strait hitting the road for the last time

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? George Strait is getting ready to park his tour bus.

The enduring country music superstar announced Wednesday during a news conference at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum that he will embark on his final tour early next year. Strait will play 21 dates in 2013, then 20 more in 2014 on The Cowboy Rides Away tour. He plans to continue recording music and making occasional live appearances after that, but his road warrior days will soon be over.

"I just don't want to go to the point where I show up and nobody else does, you know?" Strait said in an interview before making the announcement. "It's been great. I've been doing it for 30-some odd years and I've loved it. Sometimes I've not liked it as much. And here lately it's just the walking out onstage part, that's all great. I'm still loving that. It's just the hectic part about touring and traveling and bam bam bam bam. I just feel like it's time for me to try something else."

News of Strait's retirement will come as something of a shock in country quarters. He's so entrenched in the genre he's become part of the bedrock, a landmark to be marveled at repeatedly over the decades.

The 60-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member from Texas released his first single "Unwound" in 1981, before some of today's top stars were born. Since then he's had 59 No. 1 country singles and is the only artist to score a Top 10 hit in every year of his career. All his albums have gone platinum or gold, selling more than 68 million copies.

Traditional country singer Joe Nichols acknowledged Strait's impact when he called the singer "the Rolling Stones of country music" in a 2010 interview.

And in a lot of ways, that's been true. Until now. The Stones refuse to retire from the road, while Strait has decided to do it on his own terms.

"I'm sure I'll miss it. I'm sure I will," Strait said. "How can you not after doing it for so long. It was a hard decision to make. It was tough. I've lost sleep. But I think about midway through this tour I'll realize that, yeah, I did make the right decision. It's just a part of it."

The first leg of the tour will kick off Jan. 18 in Lubbock, Texas, and end June 1 in San Antonio. Dates for 2014 will be announced later. Martina McBride will join Strait on tour in 2013.

Strait said he was nervous about whether fans will come out and see him, but that's rarely been a cause for concern over the years. His live show is one of country's top draws. He's sold more than 4.3 million headlining concert tickets since 1999, according to Pollstar, an average of more than 18,000 per performance.

He said one of his most memorable performances was his last-minute replacement of Eddie Rabbitt at the 1984 Houston Rodeo in the Astrodome: "He just happened to get a case of laryngitis, which was a stroke of luck for me." And he also fondly remembers opening for Willie Nelson in those early years: "I opened for Willie at a fair one time and we were right in the middle of our set and the crowd just starts going crazy and I'm thinking, 'They're really liking this stuff.' I look behind me and Willie's bus is pulling up."

It's been a long time since Strait opened for anybody, and he can count most of today's major stars among the myriad who have opened for him. Yet he admits, he sometimes still gets that indescribable feeling you get when you walk out on the stage.

"It's just amazing the energy that you feel," Strait said. "I'd say three years ago we played in my hometown of San Antonio for 55,000 people at the Alamodome and walking out there with a crowd like that is just, you're excited, you're scared. There are just so many emotions going on. I still get nervous for things like that until after I sing about the first one or two songs, then I settle down. To try to describe what you feel, it's just a big electric energy feel that's right on top of you."

Strait says he knows he'll miss that feeling, and he reserves the right to return to the road if he wants. But Wednesday he was feeling comfortable with everything.

"I hope people show up because we're going to a lot of the places we've been to for so long, from year to year, and it's kind of like saying goodbye to that," he said. "It's going to be a little emotional."

Upon his release, Ames? mutilated body turns up in an abandoned warehouse, and all roads lead to Shelton. Rice attempts to defend him, but his client makes it impossible?Shelton wants to go to prison?so he does time, but then members of Rice?s legal team start to die. The attorney suspects Shelton, but can?t connect him to the crimes, so he races against the clock to save the lives of his assistant, Sarah (Leslie Bibb), D.A. Jonas (Bruce McGill), and his own wife and child. The movie may sound like a Yank reboot of the Japanese chiller Cure, in which an inmate kills from inside institutional walls, but plays more like a mash-up between The Silence of the Lambs, without the psychological complexity, and The Devil?s Advocate, without the cynical giggles. F. Gary Gray got his start with hip-hop videos and urban action flicks, like Set It Off, until he hit the big time with his remake of The Italian Job. Law Abiding Citizen is a disappointing muddle from a director who?s done better in the past and will surely do better in the future. ?Kathleen C. Fennessy

Judge Britney rules on 'X Factor,' Demi charms

(AP) ? Judge Britney Spears is in control on "The X Factor."

During the season debut airing Wednesday on Fox, the audience cheers her, Simon Cowell defers to her and Spears is crisp, if not a wit, in her contestant verdicts.

We get the pop princess who knows how to hold the spotlight, not the young woman who has struggled in her personal life, in the taped premiere of "X Factor." Live episodes start airing in November.

In the episode screened Tuesday night at Grauman's Chinese Theater, Spears frets that it will be difficult to "sit there and be opinionated."

Not so much.

"I want to know who let you onstage," she says to a contestant who insulted Demi Lovato, the other freshman joining Simon Cowell and Antonio "L.A." Reid as a judge.

"I felt I was listening to Alvin and the Chipmunks," she tells one singer. "You're flawless," she says to another.

Jitters may be making her matter-of-fact, and even stern, but she appears unlikely to morph into a Paula Abdul-style pushover even if she gets more comfortable. Her "X Factor" style: sleek, form-fitting dresses and an impressive array of frowns and surprised smiles.

Cowell, the show's creator, executive producer and the Scrooge of compliments, practically beamed as he tended to give Spears the last word on contestants ? which often is "no," at least as this episode has it.

"You're very good at this," he tells Spears at one point. "Everyone says I'm the mean one," he adds later.

At one point, when a pained-looking Spears joins the panel in rejecting a singer she'd recorded with, and who is attempting a comeback, she hangs onto her composure.

There are more changes to "X Factor" than the addition of Spears and Lovato, who replaced season one Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger after the show fell short of Cowell's high-flying ratings predictions.

The revamped "X Factor" retains the pro forma mix of oddballs and genuinely talented singers, but it's less grandiose. One example: The addition of a reality TV-style backstage glance at contestant rivalries, but with a light touch.

Fox's show isn't the only game in town. NBC expanded this week's return of "The Voice" to three days, with an episode airing Wednesday against "X Factor."

Spears, 30, who reportedly got a one-season, $15 million contract to join the show, appears to be its top draw. She earned the loudest audience applause at the public screening, held after Cowell and company put their mark on the cement outside Grauman's on Hollywood Boulevard.

"I love you, Britney," one fan called out. "We all love you, Britney," chorused others.

She went from child performer to international star with her 1999 debut album, "Baby One More Time." More hits followed, including "Oops! ... I Did It Again" and "Toxic," but her life was difficult, including rehab spells and time in a psychiatric ward.

Last fall, as she toured in support of her seventh album, the hit "Femme Fatale," she told The Associated Press in London: "I hear the older you get, the wiser you get and the more you know what you want ? so hopefully it'll be a good year."

Lovato, who has faced her own personal challenges, looked at ease on "X Factor." The 20-year-old singer showed poise, warmth ? and a sense of stagecraft.

A contestant told of being bullied in school and taking comfort from Lovato's own challenges and her anti-bullying efforts. When the young woman, who wowed the judges with her performance, broke down sobbing, Lovato beckoned her over for a long hug.

During a Q&A Tuesday, an audience member asked Reid if it was important to make sure aspiring stars can avoid the pitfalls of fame. It's impossible to predict who will withstand the pressure, Reid replied, then lauded both Spears and Lovato as the "complete package" of talent and personality.

The two-hour "X Factor" season debut, airing 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday, is followed by a second episode Thursday.

The Right Response to the Libya and Egypt Attacks

The story has just begun. We don?t yet know its contours?whether it will unfold as a one-shot tragedy or as the opening salvo of a monumental crisis. But less than a full day after the violent assault on the U.S. embassy in Egypt and the killing of our ambassador and three of his staff in Libya, a few lessons can be noted.

First, diplomacy still matters, perhaps above all else. Hillary Clinton reported this morning, in her most eloquent news conference as secretary of state, that Libyan citizens and security forces had tried to fight off the small mob of militants who set fire to the U.S. consulate in Benghazi and that, afterward, they?d sheltered many survivors and carried the ambassador, J. Christopher Stevens, to a nearby hospital. They did this, in good part, because they knew Stevens. A year ago, as the U.S. emissary, he had helped the rebels?who now form Libya?s fledgling democratic government?in their fight to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi. Ever since, he?d been greeted as a friend in his travels around the country.

Similarly, Clinton said, Egyptian security forces helped American guards stave off those who stormed the U.S. embassy in Cairo before much damage was done. Though she didn?t mention it, the new president, Mohamed Morsi, must know that his country?s fortunes, and thus his own political prospects, depend on foreign aid and investment. A few days earlier, Morsi had met with American businessmen and tried to assure them that the climate for investment was sound. Nobody will believe this message if he can?t guarantee the security of foreign embassies on Egyptian soil?or prosecute those who violate their sovereign status.

Second, what we?re seeing is, potentially, a conflict not only between the West and radical Islam but also between elements within Islam. Obama has dispatched 200 Marines to beef up security at other embassies in the region, a sensible move. But beyond that, he and his aides no doubt know that, in the long run, it?s important for President Morsi, Libya?s leaders, and at least a few other prominent Muslim spokesmen throughout the region to denounce the most violent of these protesters?and to denounce the very tactic of assaulting embassies and killing diplomats as an antiquated practice that violates their principles and has no place in contemporary Middle Eastern politics.

Getting them to do this will be a delicate task, requiring a fine mix of pressure (no more IMF loans or business investment if you don?t control the violence?not a threat, just a fact of what will happen) and incentives (the money and much else will flow if you get on the right side).

A major obstacle here is that domestic politics suffuses every pixel of this picture. Morsi and the other Muslim leaders are in a bit of a bind. The militants form a segment of their constituencies; many others may oppose the militants? action but regard the American-made anti-Islamic movie that inspired the protest as more repellent still. Morsi issued a statement demanding that the U.S. government prosecute those who made the movie. Obviously, this is not going to happen. It is very hard to convince foreigners, especially those who grew up under authoritarian regimes, that America is not a monolithic society. The notion that some idiots and ideologues can make and release a movie without getting some stamp of approval from the government strikes them as literally unbelievable.

One task ahead is to persuade these leaders that this really is the way things work here, that we value free speech, even stupid free speech?while still expressing some sympathy with their concerns (and understanding that they might not want to adopt the same system). This is a long-term task, one that requires?and will evolve in tandem with?the integration of their societies into the rest of the world: economically, socially, and, to some extent, culturally. The major challenge is that this integration is precisely what the militant protesters most oppose. If the events of the last 24 hours prove pivotal, it will be because they forced the Muslim leaders to choose which path they want to follow.

Synology launches DiskStation DS413j NAS server for your own private cloud

If you like your data local, but crave remote access, you've now got options like Synology's new DiskStation DS413j -- a network-attached storage (NAS) server for your own private cloud. The feature-packed box has four drive bays for a total of 16TB storage, and you can mix and match HDDs of different sizes without losing the comfort of RAID. Along with what you'd expect from NAS, its media server will stream content to your console or TV via DLNA or UPnP and push tunes to your stereo, with iOS and Android apps for couch DJing. The server will sync your files across computers if you wish, and give you access to all that data on the move via the internet or mobile apps. And, if you need more files, you can download directly using your favorite protocols -- it'll even automate them if you trust RSS feeds to make recommendations. All this can be yours for around $380, depending on the retailer, but don't forget to budget for drives to fill those empty bays.

Kellie Pickler Shaves Head in Support of Cancer-Stricken Friend


On the cover of Maxim last month, Kellie Pickler lent her body to a very important cause: the U.S. military.

Now, the former American Idol singer has offered up her head for another one: breast cancer, specifically good friend Summer Holt Miller, who was diagnosed with in June, has undergone a double mastectomy and starts chemotherapy tomorrow."

"Cancer does not discriminate," says Pickler in a statement on her Facebook page, while Miller adds: "If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it."

You can watch a video documenting Kellie and Summer's experience on the official Athena® Water’s website. That company will also be making a monetary contribution in Miller's name to the American Cancer Society.
